In short
The problems we see most are mechanical: back pain, sciatica, neck pain, headaches and migraines, hip pain, arthritis and fibromyalgia. The first visit is built around finding out whether we can help before any care begins, and if another kind of care would serve you better we will say so.
People tend to do well with chiropractic care when the problem is mechanical: something in the way the spine and joints move, and how that affects the nervous system and the way you move. This guide runs through the conditions we see most at the clinic, in the words we use on each condition page, and ends with how we decide whether we can help you in particular.
Back pain
If you are experiencing the misery of back pain, you are not alone. Back pain affects around 80% of people at some stage during their lifetime. It is the problem we see most often, whether it stops you bending, lifting or sleeping.
Sciatica
If you are suffering from pain, numbness or a tingling sensation that radiates from your lower back and travels down one of your legs, it is likely you are suffering from sciatica. Because the symptoms are in the leg but the cause is usually in the lower back, a thorough examination matters more than treating the sore spot.
Neck pain
With two-thirds of the population having neck pain at some point in their lives, it is one of the most common symptoms we treat people for. Long days at a screen and long hours behind the wheel are frequent culprits.
Headaches and migraines
Headaches and migraines can affect all people at some time in their lives. Occasional suffering is bad enough, but regular head pain can make life debilitating. Tension in the neck and shoulders is often part of the picture, which is why headaches can trace back to the neck.
Hip pain
Our hips are invaluable to our body and the many functions it performs. Since our hips are engaged in nearly every way we move, pain located in this area can have very debilitating consequences. A sore lower back can also be compensating for a hip that does not move well, so the two are often examined together.
Arthritis
There is no getting away from the fact that life with arthritis can be difficult. But by making a few simple adjustments it is possible to take control and lead a full and active life. Care here is about keeping joints moving rather than resting them.
Fibromyalgia
If you are one of the 1.5 million people in the UK currently suffering with fibromyalgia and its many symptoms, such as loss of spine movement, muscle tightness and heightened pain in joints, we can help you. Care is gentle and built around your symptoms on the day.
How we decide whether we can help you
The first visit is built around finding out whether we can help before any care begins: your health history, a neurological and orthopaedic examination, posture and gait analysis and a set of vitality tests. At the second visit you hear what we found and, if care is suitable, a plan is agreed before anything is done. If we think you would be better served by a physiotherapist, your GP or a hospital, we will say so.
